Stapedectomy (Surgery for Otosclerosis)

Medically reviewed by Prof. Dr. Tamer Fawzy, Consultant ENT Surgen

Restoring Hearing by Replacing the Immobilized Stapes

Why We Perform It

Otosclerosis is a condition where the stapes bone in the middle ear becomes fixed and unable to vibrate normally, preventing sound from reaching the inner ear efficiently. Stapedectomy replaces the immobilized stapes with a tiny prosthesis, allowing sound vibrations to be transmitted again and improving hearing.

Indications

  • Conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis
  • Progressive hearing reduction with intact eardrum
  • Patients who prefer surgical hearing restoration instead of hearing aids

The Technique – Stapes Replacement

Under microscopic visualization, the immobilized stapes bone is carefully removed or bypassed. A very small prosthetic piston is placed to connect the incus to the inner ear, restoring sound transmission. The procedure is typically performed through the ear canal using delicate microsurgical instruments. No external skin incison

After the Procedure

Most patients return home the same day. Hearing improvement may be noticed soon after surgery, although full stabilization occurs over several weeks. Patients are usually advised to avoid heavy lifting, nose blowing, or pressure changes during early healing.

Risks / Complications

Early (within 2 weeks)

Mild dizziness or imbalance may occur temporarily after surgery. Changes in taste on one side of the tongue may also occur but usually resolve with time.

Delayed (after 3-6 months )

In rare cases hearing improvement may be incomplete or hearing may worsen. Revsion surgery / may be required.

Persistent dizziness or prosthesis displacement are uncommon but recognized complications
