Why We Perform It
Enlarged or chronically infected tonsils can cause recurrent throat infections, difficulty swallowing, snoring, or obstructed breathing during sleep. When medical treatment no longer provides adequate control, tonsillectomy removes the diseased tissue and restores normal throat function and comfort.
Indications
- Recurrent tonsillitis affecting quality of life
- Enlarged tonsils causing snoring or sleep disturbance
- Chronic tonsillar inflammation or persistent throat discomfort
The Technique – Coblation Tonsillectomy
Coblation tonsillectomy uses controlled radiofrequency energy to gently dissolve tonsil tissue at relatively low temperatures. This allows precise removal while minimizing thermal injury to surrounding muscles. The technique typically results in reduced bleeding during surgery and may improve early postoperative comfort compared with traditional methods.
After the Procedure
A sore throat is expected for several days after surgery and may extend to the ears due to shared nerve pathways. Adequate hydration and soft foods are important during the first week of recovery. Most patients gradually return to normal diet and activities within 10–14 days.
Risks / Complications
Early (within 2 weeks)
Pain during swallowing is expected during the healing phase. Bleeding may occur in a small percentage of patients, most commonly within the first week after surgery.
Delayed (after 2 weeks)
Late bleeding is uncommon but can occur as the surgical area continues to heal. Temporary changes in taste or throat sensation are rare and usually resolve over time.
