Why We Perform It
Excess tissue in the soft palate and throat can narrow the airway during sleep, leading to loud snoring or obstructive sleep apnea. Using Radiofrequency (Coblation) UPPP removes or reshapes this tissue to widen the airway and improve airflow during sleep. Often combined with Tonsillectomy under GA
Indications
- Obstructive sleep apnea caused by palatal airway obstruction
- Severe snoring affecting quality of life
- Failure or intolerance of non-surgical treatments such as CPAP
The Technique – Palatal Airway Enlargement
During UPPP, excess tissue from the soft palate and uvula is carefully removed or reshaped to enlarge the airway at the level of the throat. The tonsils may also be removed if present. The remaining tissues are repositioned to create a wider and more stable airway during sleep.
After the Procedure
Sore throat and swallowing discomfort are common during the first days after surgery. A soft diet and adequate hydration are recommended during early recovery. Most patients gradually return to normal activities within one to two weeks.
Risks / Complications
Early (within 2 weeks)
Significant Pain during swallowing and throat discomfort are expected during healing usually last 10-15 days. Severe pain when combined with Tonsillectomy.
Bleeding, infection, or temporary changes in voice may occur but are uncommon.
Delayed (after 2 weeks)
In rare cases, persistent swallowing changes or nasal regurgitation may occur. Some patients may continue to require additional treatment for sleep apnea.
