Why We Perform It
FESS Surgery (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) is an advanced minimally invasive procedure performed by Prof. Dr. Tamer Fawzy, Consultant ENT Surgeon, to treat chronic sinusitis and restore healthy sinus drainage. Chronic inflammation of the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses can cause persistent nasal blockage, facial pressure, postnasal drip, and recurrent infections. When medical therapy does not provide lasting relief, FESS Surgery offers an effective treatment option.
Indications
- Chronic rhinosinusitis unresponsive to medical treatment
- Recurrent acute sinus infections
- Nasal polyps affecting ethmoid or maxillary sinuses
How is it done?
The Technique – Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Using high-definition nasal endoscopes, the ethmoid air cells are opened and the natural maxillary sinus opening is enlarged to improve drainage. Diseased tissue is removed while preserving healthy mucosa whenever possible. The procedure is performed entirely through the nostrils without external incisions.
After the Procedure
The nose can feel blocked after surgery due to nasal dressings, mucus or swelling. The packing used dissolves on its own. Patients are advised to rinse the nose regularly with salt water to help clear the passages. The sensation of blockage usually improves within one week. Mild bleeding may occur but typically subsides within 48 hours. Blood-thinning medications should be avoided during this period unless otherwise advised.
Risks / Complications
Early (within 2 weeks)
- Moderate to severe bleeding requiring hospitalization and a secondary procedure is extremely rare
- Pain is typically minimal — more soreness or pressure than true pain — and usually does not require analgesia beyond the third postoperative day
- Transient upper teeth numbness may occur and usually resolves within 5–7 days
- Loss of sense of smell (Anosmia)
- Eye injury (very rare ) never happened in 20 years of practice and over 2000 cases
CSF leak: one occasion in over a 2000 cases and was corrected by another procedure within 3 weeks.
Delayed (after 2 weeks)
Recurrence of sinusitis due to allergies and lifestyle (smoking), motorcycle riders, pets If medical management does not control symptoms, a secondary procedure may be considered.
