Tympanoplasty (Eardrum Repair)

Medically reviewed by Prof. Dr. Tamer Fawzy, Consultant ENT Surgen

Restoring Eardrum Integrity and Hearing

Why We Perform It

A perforation of the eardrum can lead to hearing loss, recurrent ear infections, and difficulty keeping the ear dry. When the eardrum does not heal on its own, tympanoplasty repairs the perforation and restores the natural barrier between the ear canal and the middle ear.

Indications

  • Persistent eardrum perforation
  • Hearing loss related to tympanic membrane defect
  • Recurrent ear infections due to chronic perforation

The Technique – Tympanic Membrane Repair

A small graft, usually taken from tissue around the ear, is used to close the perforation of the eardrum. The graft is carefully positioned under microscopic visualization to allow the membrane to heal and re-establish normal sound transmission. The procedure is typically performed through the ear canal or through a small incision behind the ear.

After the Procedure

Patients usually return home the same day. The ear may feel blocked temporarily due to packing placed to support the graft during healing. Water should be kept out of the ear until the surgeon confirms that the eardrum has healed. Hearing gradually improves as the ear recovers.

Risks / Complications

Early (within 2 weeks)

Mild discomfort, temporary hearing reduction due to packing, or minor ear discharge may occur during the healing phase. Infection is uncommon and usually responds to treatment.

Delayed (after 2 weeks)

In some cases the graft may not fully take and the perforation may persist, requiring revision surgery. Significant complications are uncommon when performed by experienced ear surgeons.
