Why We Perform It
Infections or chronic disease of the middle ear can spread to the mastoid bone located behind the ear. When medical treatment is insufficient, mastoidectomy removes infected air cells and prevents further spread of disease while preserving hearing structures whenever possible.
Indications
- Chronic middle ear infection with mastoid involvement
- Cholesteatoma affecting the mastoid and middle ear
- Complications of persistent ear infections
The Technique – Mastoid Air Cell Removal
Using a surgical microscope, the mastoid bone behind the ear is carefully opened to remove diseased air cells. Specialized micro-instruments allow precise removal of infection or cholesteatoma while protecting critical structures such as the facial nerve and inner ear. The procedure is performed through a small incision behind the ear.
After the Procedure
Patients usually return home the same day or after a short hospital stay depending on the complexity of the surgery. The ear may feel blocked temporarily due to packing used to support healing. Follow‑up visits are important to monitor healing and ensure the ear remains infection‑free.
Risks / Complications
Early (within 2 weeks)
Mild pain, temporary hearing reduction due to packing, or minor ear discharge may occur during early healing. Infection or bleeding are uncommon and usually respond well to treatment.
Delayed (after 6 months – one year )
Recurrent infection or residual cholesteatoma may occasionally require further treatment or revision surgery. Significant complications are uncommon when performed by experienced ear surgeons.
